CSI: King Salmon

Finally wrapped up training in King Salmon with our wildlife forensics class.  Here's me showing off my perfect cast of the 'perpetrator's' ATV tire.

Cathedral Valley District

This is either the Temple of the Sun or the Temple of the Moon, in Cathedral Valley, a remote part of the park that lies north of the Reef.

daaa-DUM...daaa-DUM

Here's a juvenile salmon shark that washed up at Sand Point. They can grow to be up to ten feet long, but this one's only forty-six inches. I know 'cause I measured it before cutting out its spine for the scientists to study.

Violence with a Porpoise

Here's a harbor porpoise on Yellow Banks with a nice big shark bite taken out of its head. Check out the triangular tooth marks on the wound.

River Otter

A dead river otter on Shi Shi beach, which has me thinking I should just call this DeadMammalBlog.

Whale

A humpback whale rots on Cannonball Island. This carcass is over a year old and by now is more like whale jerky, but you can still see the huge vertebrae. That's Mike, my erstwhile roommate, providing scale.

Sea Lion

A dead Sea Lion on the beach south of Cape Alava. Morsels like this sometimes draw out cougars or bear.
